About the GET Academy TEFL (Trinity CertTESOL) Program
The Global English Teaching Academy (GET Academy) is a world-class provider of initial teacher training courses for English Language Teachers in Austria. The academy is run by a team of qualified teachers and administrators aiming to offer a quality teacher training experience to candidates from around the world. Our trainers originate from different areas around the globe and as a result, they bring a wealth of experience teaching English as a foreign language (EFL).
We work in conjunction with the Austrian Ministry of Education to deliver parts of the Austrian national curriculum in English. This relationship enables our Student Teacher to have direct access to students in the Austrian public education system and deliver to them an active learning experience through project-based teaching during their training. We aim to provide new teachers with, not only the qualifications and theoretical knowledge to secure employment, but more importantly the practical experience needed to succeed in this demanding industry.
Our TEFL (Trinity CertTESOL) has a heavy focus on putting skills into practice. The reason for this is that historically, we have found teachers with TESOL certifications lacked the practical experience required in the classroom. The structure of other programs, some of which are still on the market today, meant that teachers could pass the certification process in four weeks having only undertaken the minimum numbers of hours teaching observation which is required by the CertTESOL. Additionally, these hours did not need to be completed in real classrooms and therefore companies could create controlled laboratory style settings allowing them to promote their “success rates”. Consequently, many people who participate in these programs gain their certification but are subsequently unable to handle real classrooms. This sometimes results in them failing their employer’s teaching assessments and even losing their jobs.
As a result, we decided to combine Trinity College London’s CertTESOL with a vocational TEFL certification. What this does is it enables us to ensure anyone who gains their certification through us, gains not only the qualifications and theoretical knowledge to secure employment, but also valuable best-practice teaching and practical experience in real classrooms, which enables them to go on to succeed in this demanding industry. The feedback from our alumni is that they feel way ahead of their colleagues when embarking on a new teaching position and this is one of the things which makes our program popular.
Additionally, applicants who successfully complete our program receive two certificates, one for the vocational TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and one for Trinity’s CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) which is the accredited professional qualification awarded by Trinity College London. Additionally, it is globally-recognised which means you can teach English around the world.
Successful applicants who work towards these simultaneously, demonstrate that successful completion of the program is all you need. However, successful completion of the whole program is not easy as we must abide by Trinity College London’s CertTESOL requirements, which some individuals can find challenging. Nevertheless, we have found that individuals whom are motivated to teach and find it enjoyable and want to act as cultural ambassadors will have the best success rates. Every year we bring hundreds of teachers from native English-speaking countries into Austrian classrooms and we aim to ensure every single one of them leaves with a qualification.
What to expect
The program aims to provide applicants with a strong set of practical teaching skills which they are comfortable implementing to aid them in the sound application of contemporary language teaching methodologies, therefore we refer to successful applicants as ‘Student Teachers’. The approach to English language teaching emphasised on the program draws on a range of approaches and methodologies broadly considered to constitute best practice in contemporary language learning and teaching. This includes Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and Task-based Learning (TBL) within a communicative language teaching (CLT) framework. Don’t worry if you don’t know what all of these are, you will learn about them during the program.
While participating in the program, Student Teachers will visit dozens of different schools, teach hundreds of students and we aim for them to accrue around 300 hundred hours of teaching practice with real students (including a minimum of 15 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice). The academy’s partnership with the Austrian Ministry of Education allows Student Teachers to put theory into practice in Austrian state schools, as a result we follow their schedule which generally means arriving at the school for a 7:30 or 8am start, and sometimes running all the way through to 1:30 or 2pm. Subsequent to teaching practice Student Teachers develop their theoretical knowledge of language teaching and learning in what we call input sessions, workshops or feedback sessions with senior teachers, course tutors and other student teachers at one of our three campus locations.
By combining aspects of several established and respected approaches, the program can train Student Teachers to be adaptive to the contextual needs of the learners, the schools, the national curriculums, and the practices of teaching in classrooms. We try to arrange for Student Teachers to have visited all our campuses across Austria at some point during the program. This means a ‘changeover’ day which occurs on a weekend to enable experience of different classroom environments, reduced travel times and give Student Teachers the opportunity to experience all the country has to offer. Additionally, Austria has many public holidays all of which Student Teachers have free and are often used to explore Austria and have fun or just chill out.
Upon successful completion of the program, Student Teachers who complete all the required coursework will be awarded their qualifications. We combine this with our job placement program where graduates who wish to continue their travels or work abroad will gain assistance in navigating the TEFL industry’s job market and finding a teaching post that suits their location and teaching preferences. Given the wealth of experience gained through the program, our graduates are preferred by employers around the world, giving them access to sources of continued professional development and encouragement to continue developing as teachers long after they leave the program.
We believe our program is the best on the market, so much so, that graduates of our TEFL (Trinity CertTESOL) program are eligible to apply for positions in the company. For example, we are currently offering teaching placements in the GET Academy summer program. Yes, this is a paid position and while working in the summer program, participants receive not only a generous salary and subsidised accommodation, they will gain further experience in a teaching environment.
